Microsoft has launched Kinect, the controller-less controller, which tracks body movement and features voice recognition for PC’s. Originally launched on its XBox 360 gaming platform back in Nov 2010, it became the fastest selling consumer device, shifting 8 million units between Nov 2010 and Jan 2011.
But the unit for PC comes at a price! In fact nearly twice as much as the XBox unit. Microsoft explains the rise is due to new technologies in the device such as 40cm distance recognition, half that of the XBox and also the code to allow it to work across multiple Windows versions. Currently the device has only launched in the states, look out for UK launch dates and pricing here.
But they face competition from companies making similar devices with perhaps more advanced technologies…

The Gadget Geeks, Sky One’s new gadget program launched this week, not surprising it was on Monday at 8pm, the same schedule as Channel 5′s The Gadget Show. The big draw is the rivaling competition, £30000 worth of gadgetry to be won but free to enter unlike the £1.50 phone and text rate applied by Channel 5.
The show had the feel of a cross between The Gadget Show and Myth Busters (Discovery Channel), with tests, ratings and building gadgetry via way of challenges. With a little more polishing this could become a truly grear gadget show.
Take a look at their website here:

The Consumer Electronic Show (CES) is the place where all the major players show their latest tech, this year it’s been dominated by internet connected TVs, the future of television is the two screen experience, using a second device such as an iPad or iPhone (and not forgetting other tablets and smartphones), the second screen would display the EPG whilst not having to leave the current show on the main screen, it would also allow you to interact via social media with others watching the same show. Virgin Media’s TiVo iPad app will be arriving shortly and Sky has recently bought into the Zeebox company with an app integrating the functions of the SKY+ HD box later in the year.
The real question is “do we need it?”, or do we just want to turn on the box, kick back and relax? What do yo think?

I’ve never felt the need to talk about tooth brushes before, but like a lot of items technology now plays a part. And Channel 5′s gadget show give away an electric tooth brush in their weekly competition, so I’d like to mention the brushes we use at home.
The first is Angela’s, the Braun Oral B Triumph, the brush is rechargeable by way of the provided dock which uses a two prong shaving point plug, the dock itself has no connector and the brush has no connecting socket, the brush sits in the oval dock and by way of contact charges the battery.
The brush also features wireless technology which talks to a timing unit which also doubles as a clock, a modern piece for the bathroom, when the brush is switched on the timer begins, separating your mouth in to 4 quarters asking you to concentrate on each quarter for 30 seconds, after each section the brush vibrates to notify you to move on to the next.
There are a number of different heads, for brushing and polishing and the movement of the brushes changes automatically dependent on which head you are using.
Is the brush good? Well Angela certainly gives it the thumbs up, and there are plenty of offers to be had as the full price is recommended at £180.
A number of brushes are also available without the wireless smart guide unit.

If you buy a Nespresso machine before the 31st January you also qualify for £40 or £60 (dependent on machine purchased) Club Nespresso credit to spend on coffee capsules.
There are a number of different manufacturers, we opted for the Magimix which comes with the Aeroccino machine for milk frothing and from reviews makes great hot chocolate! And one of each 16 varieties of coffee capsules, that should keep me going for a day!

October 12th, finally the day arrived for the long awaited Apple iOS 5 update! But is it an easy update?

My first prep began in the morning with an update to iTunes, version 10.5, straight forward through the Apple update software.
The main iOS update was scheduled for 10am pacific time, 6pm GMT, and with all the anticipation around the world I decided I should leave the update for a few hours, realistically I should have left the update for a few days! as the download was slow and problematic with a number of restarts, the 700mb over my 100mb broadband should have been a couple of minutes, instead it took nearly 30 minutes.

So straight forward, plug iPad into PC, click update in iTunes, wait 10 minutes and job done?
Not for me I’m afraid, iTunes insists on making a back up to ensure all apps purchased through the iPad are backed up on the PC, which is fair enough, but it tends to be a lengthy process, and after around 15/20 minutes I was greeted with a Back up unsuccessful message.
The second attempt was very similar, this time wielding a 3200 error code, which typically didn’t relate to any online help article, reboots all around and on to the next…
The third attempt seemed to flow through the back up process, before tackling the update within a matter of seconds which didn’t seem correct before moving into the backup restoration which didn’t move for a further 20 minutes. The inevitable pull the USB lead and reboot followed.

Maybe I’d walked away at the crucial update stage, the all important coffee break?? Who knows? But following the reboot it appeared I had completed the update. I was now guided through a number of set up screams, a spelling mistake but ironically true.
The first hurdle was my Apple ID, set up many years ago and happily working up until this point! Now it no longer wanted me to have a name for my ID and insisted it had to be an email address, although my email address was associated my my Apple ID it would not accept it for logging in, and so insisted I visit the Apple ID website to log in to my account and update my ID. I could only do this through the PC as the iPad was now rendered useless until I had completed this step.
With what appeared to be a simple one click to update I proceeded, but from then on the confirmations never appeared and the pages just timed out, time and time again.
Finally I passed and was able to move on, unfortunately the iPad wasn’t and at the next screen froze, another reboot and a repeat of all the previous questions, and at the end my iPad had been updated and configured all bar one missing thing, or lots if you look at it in a different light…. No apps! My pad had been wiped clean and I now had a further half hour waiting for an app restore, thankfully that worked first time!

That was the iPad 2, now onto the iPad 1 and much of the same, back up error, 3200 restoration error, 3rd time lucky and 2am it appears to be on the way.

So is the update any good? Well it’s 3am I’m too tired to look at it any more, so that will be for another day, until then here’s a teaser or maybe a spoiler, No Siri on iPad My fingers will have to do all the work for a little longer!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Virgin Media has started a huge media advertising campaign to boost sales of it’s new Tivo PVR. The price has been slashed further on its premium 1tb unit to £99.
Before angry customers could reach for the phone after forking out £150 just 3 months earlier at launch, Virgin Media sent an email offering a £50 credit the bills of all the early adopters, myself included.

If you haven’t yet read my first article about the Tivo service take a look now:
And look out for Part 2 coming shortly.

In the same week Virgin Media also released a dedicated Remote Record app to the Android Market, it’s nice to see Android getting first look before iPhone! And having downloaded the app and tested its ability I can confirm it works well. Never do we have to miss a TV show again.

At the same time pictures were released of the forthcoming iPad app with remote control features, things do seem to be steaming ahead with the development of the service. Further reports were also released with the planned updates to the Virgin Media V+ HD boxes soon to be Tivo’isd, with the ability to playback recorded programs from another Tivo PVR in the house.

And to top off what seems to be a busy schedule for Virgin Media, an announcement of new channels to be added shortly including 3 new HD channels, two from CBS and the one that I’ve been waiting for – ESPN America HD, I do enjoy live late night baseball, soon to be in glorious HD alongside the already availble ESPN HD with no extra monthly charge unlike Sky (£10p/m).

Once again Virgin Media have been breaking ground with their fibre optic broadband service, the roll out of 100mb broadband is well under way putting to shame BT’s infinity roll out which is slowly making its way to households in urban areas while out reached villages still struggle with sub standard connections, some (that i know of) still not even reaching 1mb!

I don’t mean to upset the village dwellers but my 100mb is soooo FAST!!! Sorry couldn’t resist.

It does look like virgins upgrade structure could push their basic package to 30mb, with 50mb, 100mb & 200mb being their superior upgrades, if only their cabled network was expanded to a further reach, I have a list of people chomping at the bit to switch provider.

While Virgins roll out moves swiftly, trials have now began with 200mb, and in London’s technology district the worlds first trials of 1gb broadband! WOW Bring it on!
