Kinect for Windows

Microsoft has launched Kinect, the controller-less controller, which tracks body movement and features voice recognition for PC’s. Originally launched on its XBox 360 gaming platform back in Nov 2010, it became the fastest selling consumer device, shifting 8 million units between Nov 2010 and Jan 2011.
But the unit for PC comes at a price! In fact nearly twice as much as the XBox unit. Microsoft explains the rise is due to new technologies in the device such as 40cm distance recognition, half that of the XBox and also the code to allow it to work across multiple Windows versions. Currently the device has only launched in the states, look out for UK launch dates and pricing here.
But they face competition from companies making similar devices with perhaps more advanced technologies…

ReRAM nears production

DRAM currently used in PC’s stores data extremely fast, to do so it requires an electrical charge, when the power is then turned off the data is wiped from the RAM. ReRam will hold that data info when power is lost.

Symantec warns Disable PCAnywhere software

Symantec, the company which makes Norton Internet Security, has issued a statement for the users of it’s PC anywhere software to stop using the software.
The software is aimed at businesses for remote control of PC’s. Old code had been stolen which highlighted vulnerabilities in the program.
It was recommended to disable the software until security patches were released to fix the issue. Other software packages by Norton were not at a heightened security risk and current “out of the box” security settings would protect.

Photo Sharing with Dropbox

If you are using Dropbox for backup or synchronising did you know you can also share photographs using the Photos folder. Place a folder of photos within the Photos folder in your Dropbox, then go to: Dropbox.com/photos and sign in, you’ll then see all the folders within the Photos folder, click on the folder you’d like to share and at the top of the page click “Get sharable link” to display a short-code link , you can now copy and paste this code in to a webpage, email, twitter or Facebook etc. to share your photo album.

Picasa Updated to 3.9

Adobe Reader update

The new quarterly update to Adobe Reader has been released. The version number is 10.1.2. If you are not prompted to update, open the program, click Help and then Check for updates, you can also check your current version number by clicking Help and then About Adobe Reader.

Updating your system – iPad

I’m always talking about the importance of updating, not only does it bring security features to your system but sometimes new features as well.
More and more people have iPads now, but I’m still coming across out of date systems, the latest update is iOS 5 (5.0.1), to find out your current version go to: Settings > General > About and look at the version number. If you need to update plug the iPad into your PC, open iTunes and follow the instructions, it’s quite simple.
