Windows 8 drops DVD playback support

Microsoft has confirmed DVD video playback is to be dropped from Windows 8 and Windows Media Player. Support will now come from third parties such as VLC.
Microsoft has decided to move to a full featured codec pack to allow playback of downloaded and streaming content.

Dropbox doubles referral space!

Dropbox has doubled the storage space for referrals to the service.
When your friends download Dropbox by way of invite you will both now receive 500mb, doubling the previous 250mb, and with a maximum of 32 referrals that’s a huge 16gb on top of the initial 2gb.

The announcement comes quickly after news of investment from U2′s Bono & Edge and the possible launch of Google’s GDrive!

London tube live updates added to Google Maps

Google has added London tube live updates to Google Maps.
The updates can be accessed via PC, Mac or Android device (smartphone/tablet).
Earlier in the year nationwide train timetables were added and just last month traffic data was added signalling further the demise of the dedicated satnav unit.

I was called out to a customer this morning after carpet fitters had installed a new flooring to his office, he informed me they had re-inserted all the cables exactly as when they unplugged the system. On arrival I viewed the Desktop tower PC which lives under his desk, all lights on and flashing as I would expect, so I dived under the desk to find the monitor cable unplugged!
When asked “did you check the cables before calling me?” the reply was “No”! Of course why would you check the cables????

Windows 8 October launch???

A report claims Microsoft is to release its Windows 8 operating system this October, 3 years after the release of Windows 7, in a bid to maximise tablet sales running up to Christmas.
Windows 8 is the first OS for Microsoft to be supported on ARM processors as well as Intel chips, designed for touch screen desktop PC’s and tablets.
Nokia is believed to be working on a new tablet, rumours suggest a “Lumia” branding inline with its latest smartphone which uses the Windows Phone 7 OS, and likely to use Windows 8 after its recent partnership with Microsoft.
Last month Microsoft released a public BETA version of Windows 8 with over 1 million downloads recorded in the first week!

OnLive app breaches Microsoft Licensing

Microsoft is working with OnLive to address licensing issues with its new Windows 7 hosted desktop app available on iPad & Android tablets. The app features a Windows 7 desktop with Microsoft Office applications Word, Excel & PowerPoint, alongside Adobe Reader and Flash enabled browser, the service is free with 2gb of cloud storage, with monthly Plus & Premium plans with extra functionality and storage.
Unfortunately the app is currently only available in the US.

Multi Monitor Setup

After helping a client today with a multi monitor setup it was nice to receive an email this evening stating how happy she is and how its helping her complete her work. Although the modem has had to be repositioned which the cat isn’t too happy about, quite often found soaking up the heat!
