2 Major updates
Posted by Simon Salvin on 20. What’s that I hear you ask, well when Blu Ray was launched it wasn’t a completed specification, the High Def disc format promised internet connectivity and advanced features which haven’t appeared until now, the update to profile 1.1 brought the picture in picture option allowing you to see the person giving the commentary if you select this from the menu, for me I’ve never listened to a directors commentary, I’d rather just watch the movie, so I certainly haven’t got any desire to watch the director as well! But it’s there if thats your thing??? Profile 2.0 brings the internet connectivity feature, if the film studios can’t cram enough special features onto the huge 50gb discs then they can now create extra content stored on the web that can only be accessed from the interactive section of the disc menu. Its a good idea in theory but when I recently decided to take a look at some content it took so long to download a 2 minute video I quickly got bored and didn’t spend to long afterwards looking at any more, and its not that I have a slow broadband connection, ADSL2 just under 10mbps!
The next BIG BIG update was recently released, firmware version 2.3, and the one that all hardcore home cinema fans have been waiting for, at last DTS HD and DTS Master Audio, connect your PS3 to the latest breed of home cinema receiver (mines an Onkyo) and the sound just blows you away, so crisp and clear, match that with the High Def picture and your transported right into the action, sounds like a marketing sales speech but it really is that good, we were both very impressed.
If you’re an owner of the PS3 ensure your connected to the internet and download the latest firmware now!
