Wii sploitation

Posted by on 08. Jul 2008 on Gaming

We all know that the Nintendo Wii is the best selling games console around, and that its also great fun. I’d go as far as saying it makes you look stupid in front of the telly (and maybe your mates as well?).

The last 2 Christmases there’s been a shortage of Wii‘s, and many disappointed children on Christmas day! For some it’s an opportunity to buy in when stock levels have peaked and then exploit the EBay market desperately seeking the elusive Wii, double or even treble the price, for those with deep enough pockets, plain stupid, or just fed up with nagging kids, its a quick easy get rich quick scheme.

I did a little digging around to find out about pricing, it appears that the manufacturers can set minimum pricing, failing to abide by their rules means you lose the right to sell their goods, quite simple, but there is no guide to stop you adding the pounds on. Lets face it we live in Rip Off Britain as it is, we don’t want to be exploited anymore.

Its just a few weeks away from my nephews 12th birthday, my brother gave me call and said we wanted to buy him a Wii fit but as usual there was no stock anywhere, as tiny amounts of stock hit the shelves both on the high street and internet they were just as quick to fly off the shelf. So he asked if I could also join the hunt.

A few days ago I walked into town, asked in all the game shops, still no stock and no idea of when any would be available, I had given up for the day, when returning home I passed a shop with a board outside on the pavement stating "Wii Fit in stock!". I went in and asked at the counter if there were any left and how much they are, the man at the counter replied "Yes, they are in stock, £100"!!!!!!!!!!! That’s £30 more than RRP, when questioning the price he told me that the suppliers had increased the price and they were passing on the increase. Do I have DUMB written on my forehead? It’s blatant rubbish, why can’t people be honest and just tell you they’re exploiting the situation.
For that reason Forbidden Planet Nottingham is added to the name & shame list.

Luckily for my brother he now has a Wii fit, he was forced in to the bundle purchase that so many stores enforce now, paid £100 but got an extra game. At least they’ll be one happy 12 year old on his birthday.
