BT still holds unfair advantage

Posted by Simon Salvin on 26. Jun 2008 on Internet

I have recently been asked to transfer a number of customers broadband packages to a better deal and a one bill solution. In fact its quite easy, or so you would think but I have run in to an issue which I believe BT still holds an unfair advantage over its competitors in today’s open market.

The issue I have found stems from an inactivated BT line. The customer currently is provided services by NTL or Virgin Media as it is today, so the service is run on their cabled network. Easy enough to cancel, 30 days notice and then service is cut. But reactivation of the BT line holds a clause, you must take a 12 month telephone line rental agreement with BT.

Now BT is split in to 2 divisions, the retail side providing telephone and broadband services, and the wholesale side that looks after the BT network.

So when you see another company offering broadband and line rental packages, they have a contract with BT wholesale who carries out the required work within the exchanges. The issue I have is why can’t BT wholesale activate a line for another company to provide line rental services? Surely opening the market should have provisioned for this.

I think I will dig a little deeper and report back if I can find out any more…..
