Google tries to upset Microsoft
Posted by Simon Salvin on 04. Sep 2008 on InternetIf you’ve opened a Google search page in the last few days you may have noticed a link to Google‘s new web browser ‘Chrome‘. Although I’m a firm believer in Microsoft‘s Internet Explorer I’m always excited in something new so dived in to trial the browser. As always I don’t like to try new things on my Vista installation so I quickly booted up my XP virtual machine and quickly headed over to Google. The install was very simple and straight forward with its own install manager downloading the program and installing it and no restart required.
I haven’t had a lot of time to play with this just yet but I did encounter a crash within the first minute of using it!
You’ll notice from the screen shot above that the interface is very simple with tabbed pages and minimal clutter. On completing the installation a request to import all settings from your default browser appears. Flash player didn’t require a new download or install, I’ll be interested to see how other plugins are handled?
The download is listed as Beta, so I’m sure they’ll be a few bugs to iron out. I’m sure Microsoft weren’t too happy with there rivals releasing a browser but from what I’ve seen they don’t have too much to worry about! Firefox on the other hand has always had what appears to be good relations with Google so I’m not sure how that relationship will move forward?
Its worth the curiosity download but if like me you’re a traditionalist then I don’t see this will draw you away. The chrome isn’t quite polished enough just yet.
