Static Broke my Webpage
Posted by Simon Salvin on 04. May 2009 on PCI was recently asked to create a new email address for a client. As a BT customer I headed to the BT accounts page, logged in and after a quick Google made my way through a number of links and pages to the email sub accounts page. After filling in the details and pressing the submit button I was greeted with the error page ‘Invalid Request’! Round and round in circles I went, tweaking the details slightly with each request in the hope it would work, but no, all I got was ‘Invalid Request’.
So off to India I went, greeted by the friendly assistant, it didn’t take long for them to suggest remote access to the PC to correct the issue. So I sat back and watched the mouse run riot controlled from thousands of miles away. It amazes me when you tell them exactly what you’ve done in great detail yet it flows through that vast cavity in their head and proceeds to fly out of the window known as the ear, they do exactly what you’ve already done and they seem puzzled and amazed that there scripted help book hasn’t solved the issue.
Thanking you profusely for holding, hey don’t worry it’s only 0870, we’ll hold as long as you like! They run of to the guru of IT enlightenment to seek the answer, I never knew companies like BT let their staff loose on Google, maybe they don’t, maybe there really is an IT guru helping them. So finally when they return they transfer me to a man with a higher state of script who proceeds once more to do exactly the same after asking me exactly the same and comes to the conclusion that the router is full of static and is making the BT page faulty although I can quite happily browse the rest of the internet without interruption!
So he asks me to reboot the router several times while he fixes the issue with the account which he doesn’t want to admit BT liability in case they’re recording the call and will later cut his hands off, instead after the third reboot the page magically loads and he informs me the static has cleared, maybe it’s flowed in to me and now my hair stands on end making me look like Einstein, then again maybe not!
Oh well it was worth the comedy value and the email address is now working….
