Anti Virus recommendations

Posted by on 27. Jan 2009 on Technology

You may have read my recent post with regards to the withdrawal of Windows Live Onecare Internet Security package later in the year. I have received a number of questions regarding the subscription status once the product is removed from sale.

Microsoft is to continue the support for all valid subscriptions through the end of their 12 month period. At the point at which Microsoft releases it’s new FREE anti-virus product in place of Onecare, customers will be offered the choice of installing the new product or continue through the end of their subscription and then replace the product.

At this time I would recommend that any subscriptions due for renewal are renewed and I believe that Onecare is still a great antivirus product, Simple PC will continue to support this.

In light of the withdrawal announcement I have also decided to look at another anti-virus product to which I will recommend and support.

The choice is Avast Professional. I chose this for two reasons,

  1. Its broad range of supported products, which included Windows Home Server. When purchased in the family pack it provides server protection along with 10 client PC’s.
  2. And secondly the reviews were of an extremely high standard.

I did also like the pricing structure offering 1,2 or 3 year update subscriptions, the family pack pricing coming in at £109 for 3 years protection.

Avast is also known for its FREE offering, with a 60 day trial, and then a request for  registration via the Avast website, each year just complete the registration form and a license key is emailed to you, less than 1 minute to complete is an amazing price to pay for a years anti virus.

Avast doesn’t offer a boxed product so I won’t be offering purchases direct from Simple PC, however the online payment system is simple with license keys emailed to you directly.
