Are you unbundled?
Posted by Simon Salvin on 05. Mar 2010 on Internet, TechnologyWe’re almost packed, and ready to move, statistics say moving house is the second most stressful experience behind divorce! I understand why they say that, what an upheaval it’s been.
One of the exciting parts of moving for me has been choosing a broadband supplier, you may think that’s quite geeky but again statistics show that broadband speed is now one of the major factors when choosing a new home.
For the last few years we’ve been supplied by Sky with super 14 Mbps speeds from the city telephone exchange. Moving out of the city and changing exchange was always going to throw up a few questions of speed and how do I get it?
Our nearest exchange is now Sherwood, being a major telephone exchange supplying a large area I thought the choice for high speed was going to be plentiful, surprisingly I was wrong! Sky, BT, TalkTalk, Plusnet, all the major players were happy to provide 5 Mbps, but I wanted more, surely there was a company out there providing faster speeds??
In fact there was another company, BE – www.bethere.co.uk, bbut how do they provide faster speeds over the other companies? Answer: Unbundling!
The company has its own equipment in the telephone exchange allowing them to provide fast speeds and bypass the BT control. It’s quite shocking that this technology has been around for a good few years yet BT are only now rolling out these upgrades to the mainstream exchanges.
I’ve always said that changing your broadband supplier is as important as searching the market for gas, electricity, mobile phone, and you should be revisiting the search at the end of each contract, day in day out I come across customers still paying far too much money because they’ve become comfortable with their supplier. It’s not a necessity you change your supplier but you should at least make the call and check you’re receiving the best deal available!
One of the main reasons I hear people don’t change supplier is they don’t want to change their email address, but there’s ways around this also, use an online mail service such as Hotmail, or buy your own domain such as www.salvin.me.uk (our family domain), with a mail package on top costs could be in the region of £15 a year but will provide every family member an email address like simon@salvin.me.uk. That way it doesn’t matter who’s providing your broadband as you’re not using there mail service, and that lets you concentrate on saving money!
As always we’re here to help you make the move and get you the best package around. If you’re in a BE enabled area then the service is great and the customer service is even better, we’ve been extremely happy, we didn’t quite get 14 Mbps but 11 Mbps is far better than 5! And a free wireless router thrown in for good measure.
