Installing Ubuntu 8.04 under Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 « Arcane Code

Over the last couple of months I’ve been having a look at Ubuntu, a Linux operating system, this has been more out of curiosity than anything else, and really to answer the question, can Linux be a better OS than Microsoft’s XP or Vista?

For me the answer to that question isn’t yes or no but more a case of "well you could certainly use it as an alternative", but that answer only fits the category of basic computing, or so I believe, but if you can add more light to this subject then please do reply.

The above link is a page with a very well written and documented install of Ubuntu using Virtual PC. If you have a spare windows disc and license from an old PC or if you want to try a Linux system its quite good fun using it to create a virtual machine. It allows you run an operating system in a window within your current OS. I run both the Ubuntu install and an XP install whilst my main system is Vista, if I need to give telephone support for an XP system I can easily boot into the XP virtual machine and try to recreate the issue my customer is having. I recently installed Windows 98 on a virtual machine for a customer who wanted to use some very old CD-ROMs that wouldn’t run correctly under XP.

As for the Ubuntu debate whether it can rival a Windows system, with it being an open source project and FREE, it is loaded with a number of applications to get you going, Open Office is one, the free alternative to Microsoft Office which is available as a download for Windows users if you want to give it a try? There’s also Firefox for web browsing and an email client. I haven’t got as far as looking for a media player but when I get some more time I’ll have a bit more of a play and report back.
