More Cores
I’ve moaned, shouted, screamed and literally bitched far too much recently, so enough of that and lets get back to some interesting stuff!
A while back I read that Intel were now making Celeron Processors in Dual Core. It was quite an interesting thought but initially I couldn’t seem to find any? Now they are starting to hit the high streets in both desktop and laptop form. I’ve recently sold a few laptops made by Fujitsu Siemens which feature the T1400 Dual Core Celeron. You may have also seen the latest PC World TV adverts with a desktop featuring the new processor.
With Vista now pre installed on all new PC’s the need for dual core processing is higher than ever, although single core Celeron‘s will run Vista, I’ve configured some machines with 3ghz processors and 2gb of ram and still seen the machine struggling.
When configuring the laptops I was quite surprised how well they handled. Celeron is still branded as the basic processor with a slower FSB, it was designed for the basic of operating tasks, email, internet, word processing. It’s still designed for these tasks but its added some well needed umph. No longer will it drag behind when you want to open more than 2 programs at once. The first laptop I configured had 1gb of Ram memory and Vista Home Basic, whilst running Windows Update, installing Internet Security and Anti Spyware programs and tidying up all the pre installed junk the laptop performed well handling 2-3 processes simultaneously with only brief pauses during the most intense of processing needs. The next laptop I added another 1gb of Ram and the machine came alive, still running Vista Home Basic, where 1gb will do fine, the machine worked as well if not better than some of the lower end Pentium Dual Cores. Maybe they’re based around a similar architecture?
If you were running Vista Home Premium I would always recommend 2gb of Ram minimum no matter what type of processor you’re running.
I think the Celeron Dual Core is a great edition which may finally see the redundancy of single core processing, especially as the future looks set for multiple cores, Quad Core PC’s are now easily accessible and affordable and Dual Core processing is taken to the extreme.
Here’s Intel‘s description of the new Celeron Dual Core:

Many software applications for everyday tasks are now designed for dual-core processors. With the Intel® Celeron® dual-core processor, you can now take basic computing to new levels; become more creative and productive in the home, office, or classroom.
In addition, security and virus protection often means running more than one application at a time, and the Celeron dual-core processor has the power to run them simultaneously. Based on energy-efficient microarchitecture, the Celeron dual-core processor delivers superior energy-efficient dual-core performance.
