Netgear Wireless problem!
Posted by Simon Salvin on 31. Aug 2007 on TechnologyI was called out today by a gentleman who I saw nearly a year ago, last time I’d set up a wireless router for him to get his laptop on the internet, he also had a Dell desktop PC. He must like Dell PC’s as arriving today I bumped into a shiny new Dell PC, well I actually tripped over the power cord running across the room! DOH as Homer would say haha! And what a nice machine it was too! A huge 22″ tft sat on the desk, just 3″ made my 19″ look small, I think a new monitor is on the christmas list. The PC featured a 2.4ghz E6600 Core 2 Duo processor, a massive 4gb of ram & a raid array of large Hard Drives!
I was asked to install a PCI wireless card, simple enough, no pun intended, but it didn’t want to work, the latest drivers downloaded from Netgear assured Vista compatibility but still no joy! So a quick search on the infamous Google, or should I just say “a quick Google”?, took me back to Netgears own forums and some very unhappy people.
The solution being less memory!!!! Bizarre as it seems, 2gb of Ram or above seem to render the drivers useless, hopefully Netgear will pick up on this soon and update their drivers.
When returning the card, the man infront of me was returning a Netgear USB wireless adaptor with what appeared to be a similar problem, worked fine with an XP machine but not Vista!
Don’t let it put you off Netgear products, its still my number one choice for routers! As for Vista, well there’s still the odd compatibility issue but most things are now fully functional, its fast approaching a year since the launch of Vista and now is a great time to upgrade! Look out for the new Vista & Office 2007 page being added to the website, should be live within a week!
