Windows 7 is getting closer

Posted by on 04. May 2009 on PC, Technology

If you weren’t lucky enough to get your hands on the first beta of Windows 7 then you’ll want to get your hands on the release candidate version which has just been released. Last week Microsoft Technet and MSDN subscribers were given the links to download the new (near complete) RC testing version, and tomorrow (5th May) its released to the public, this time with unlimited license keys so there’s no need to panic.

A new feature coming to the RC release is a virtual XP compatibility mode for running older applications. I look forward to testing this.

When I last reviewed Windows 7 I hadn’t had a good chance to look around it and to be quite honest there’s still a lot I need to see and play with but there was a couple of other features I wanted to share with you, they are Paint and Wordpad, 2 programs that have been found in Windows for a long time but quite often forgotten about, well they’ve had a facelift and now feature the ribbon interface found in Office 2007 programs. See screenshots below:

If you can’t wait for Windows 7 or don’t fancy the trial version but you do like the features then head over to: http://lifehacker.com/5077690/get-windows-7s-best-features-right-now and you’ll find a number of apps to bring Windows 7 features to your current XP or Vista.

And if you like the new Wordpad (featured above) then you can also download a similar app aptly named Wordpad 2009, I’ve had a look around on the web for this and it’s quite hard to come across, it seems to have been removed from a lot of sites due to the MS copyright issue, but if you search hard you’ll find it :)
