Windows Home Server Power Pack 1
For many Home Server owners Power Pack 1 is the first major update, it adds new features and corrects bug issues. Microsoft has been running a Beta test of the Power Pack 1 over the last couple of months and has worked closely with the Home Server community, particularly the members of We Got Served, one of my favourite websites which gives up to the minute info on all things Home Server related. We Got Served has also added a number of report writers focusing on the integration of Windows Media Center with Windows Home Server.
With many requests for certain features to be added to Home Server, Microsoft has listened and now Power Pack 1 has been released to manufacture (RTM). This means the update will be available to download via Windows Update sometime from mid August.
For owner of the Simple Cube – Home Server, I am pleased to announce that I have the Power Pack 1 installation and will be contacting you all shortly to offer the upgrade ahead of the release.
Two great new features worthy of a mention are the update to the connector software which connects your PC to the Home Server, this now gives the option to sleep your PC during the night, the Home Server will then wake the PC for back up and then sleep the PC again once completed, a great power saving feature!
The other major update is the ability to connect an external hard drive, instead of just adding the drive to the storage pool you will now be presented with the option to use the external drive to back up your shared storage, this allows for off site back up in case of fire etc. Something the community has been crying out for since launch.
